Attorney General, Micheal Mukasey Collapses in Washington, D.C.

Prayers to Mukasey. Source

Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey collapsed last evening while delivering a speech to a prominent legal group and was rushed to George Washington University Hospital.

The status of Mukasey's health remained uncertain even 90 minutes after the incident, which occurred at an annual Federalist Society gathering. A person who attended the dinner said Mukasey was visibly shaking and perhaps slurring his words before he fell to the floor.

Video footage showed a tuxedo-clad Mukasey, 67, falling behind a lectern as FBI agents in his security detail raced to his side.

D.C. fire and emergency services personnel were called to the Marriott Wardman Park hotel in the 2600 block of Woodley Road NW for a report of a man who had fainted in the main ballroom. Rescuers found a man suffering from a fainting spell, said Alan Etter, a D.C. fire department spokesman. Another source said the medics worked on Mukasey for about 10 minutes before taking him out of the ballroom on a gurney.

Etter declined to identify the man, citing privacy laws. The patient was conscious, had no trouble breathing and was able to speak with rescue personnel, Etter said.

And Clinton "on track" to be named Secretary of State before or after Thanksgiving?

When is this saga going to end? Memory Lane, anyone? Remember, the VP debate and Clinton being shoved, pushed everyday? I mean, what next? She may be announced by Christmas? Kwanzaa? Chanukah? When? Or will someone else be named? This is an ongoing saga, "Clinton", that just won't die.

An aide to Barack Obama's transition team says the president-elect is on track to nominate Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state after Thanksgiving. One week after the former primary rivals met secretly to discuss the idea of Clinton becoming the nation's top diplomat, the two sides were moving quickly toward making it a reality barring any unforeseen problems.

Some things just never end.

Former Senator Tom Daschle Accepts Secretary of Health and Human Services

No Surprise. Excellent Choice. He will move Obama's agenda on healthcare. We knew this was coming, his wife quit her lobbying job.

Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle has accepted President-elect Barack Obama's offer to be Secretary of Health and Human Services, Democratic officials said Wednesday.

The appointment has not been announced, but these officials said the job is Daschle's barring an unforeseen problem as Obama's team reviews the background of the South Dakota Democrat. One area of review will include the lobbying connections of his wife, Linda Hall Daschle, who has done representation mostly on behalf of airline-related companies over the years. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorize to discuss the matter publicly.

Daschle was a close adviser to Obama throughout the former Illinois senator's White House campaign. He recently wrote a book on his proposals to improve health care, and he is working with former Senate leaders on recommendations to improve the system.

Organizations seeking to expand health coverage were quick to praise the selection. continue

Obama Raises Half a Billion on Line.....AMAZING

Just amazing.........

Barack Obama raised half a billion dollars online in his 21-month campaign for the White House, dramatically ushering in a new digital era in presidential fundraising.

In an exclusive interview with The Post, members of the vaunted Triple O, Obama's online operation, broke down the numbers: 3 million donors made a total of 6.5 million donations online adding up to more than $500 million. Of those 6.5 million donations, 6 million were in increments of $100 or less. The average online donation was $80, and the average Obama donor gave more than once.

"You looked at the money being raised online in the same way that you looked at the crowds who came to the rallies," Joe Rospars, the 27-year-old director of Obama's new-media department, told The Post. "You were constantly surprised at the number of people who were coming out to see him," and, when it came to online donations, "people exceeded our expectations as to what they were willing to do." continue

Staggering......

Obama Evening Wrap Up. Job Losses 16 Year High.

Obama's home with the SS (Secret Service), Chicago, IL

••

Job Loss, Highest in 16 Years

This is bad news. What next?

With the number of new claims for U.S. jobless benefits hitting a 16-year high, some economists warn of further waves of layoffs in the months ahead.

Even already battered industries such as construction and manufacturing are expected to see more job cuts. Layoffs also are likely to spread to relatively unscathed areas such as retail, transportation and hotels and restaurants.

"I don't think any of these sectors have reached the bottom," said Carl Riccadonna, senior U.S. economist at Deutsche Bank.

The Labor Department said Thursday that new claims for jobless benefits rose last week to a seasonally adjusted 542,000 from a downwardly revised figure of 515,000 in the previous week, much higher than Wall Street economists expected.

That is also the highest level of claims since July 1992, the department said, when the U.S. economy was emerging from a recession. The four-week average of claims, which smooths out fluctuations, was even worse: It rose to 506,500, highest in more than 25 years. continue

And Michigan? 9.3% Unemployment.

Folks, this is not good.

And for a holiday treat??? Fannie and Freddie suspending foreclosures during the holiday season. Does that mean after January 1, 2009 it is business as usual?

The Big 3 Automakers, A Travesty

Today, all I heard was this, "Did you see the senate committee question the Big 3 Automakers and how they arrived in D.C.?"

If the Big 3 Automakers need money so gravely, why are they flying around in private jets?

For me, it does not mean much, but for the average person who are watching the daily "Bailout News" while jobs are disappearing, it does mean something.

This is why our Speaker, Nancy Pelosi said this, "Until they show us the plan, we cannot show them the money". And my further question is this, "Why did you not ask this of Hank Paulson of Treasury, who has given out money to these financial institutions and they have not spread the wealth?" In fact they are sitting on the money and paying themselves nice, fat bonuses.

I understand what needs to be done. It is obvious, that we as a country can not allow the Big 3 Automakers go under, but we can be angry about this.

The Big 3 Automakers are behind the eight ball on every turn. They allowed themselves to be in bed with the oil kings, created some of the largest gas guzzlers ever, ignored oil prices, turned deaf on energy efficient automobiles, and don't understand what the word "environment" means. Now when things are bad, to the brink that they may not be able to meet payroll or pension payments in the coming months, they get in their private jets and fly in exclusively to Washington, D.C. with their hands out.

I am sick of it. Do they deserve bailout money? No. But in all practicality, they must survive.

Barack Obama has a big problem with many moving parts when we talk "economy". The next two years will be challenging. People voted for change and expect it, starting with taming the "Bailout Money", because it is the average voter who is barely making it that needs help the most.

Obama Evening Wrap Up. The slug.

Obama's Motorcade in Chicago

••

The economy is falling off the cliff. The Dow under 8000 points.

The bad news of the economy keeps on rolling. We have the dictators of the Auto Industry on Capitol Hill, with their hands out.

We want bailout money, too!!!

We hear grumblings from major cities across this country, we need money too!!

What about the American Public, who are scrimping to get by? Bailout? No?

I have a love/hate feeling with the auto industry. All of my cars in the past 10 years have been foreign with the exception of a Pontiac. We are in the hunt for a new car next year, and we are not looking at the American Car Industry.

What happened to them? The auto industry, that is. Were they so short-sighted and in bed with the petro dictators of this country, that they could not see the forest before the trees?

Part of me says, let 'em die. They deserve it. All I see on television is Hummer, Cadillac Escalade commercials. Gas guzzling cars so expensive, who is buying these cars?

Then the other part of me, understand the whole picture. If we let the auto industry die, go bankrupt, then we are talking about millions of jobs. Jobs which expands past the auto industry, but are adjacent to the industry, the suppliers, dealerships, etc. And let us not forget the pensions that many Americans are tied too, that will just belly-up as well.

The auto industry is in a hard place. No one is purchasing these cars. These cars are too expensive, energy insufficient and with no buyers. What will happen next? Who is next? After the selfish bailout of Wall Street, of all places, there still exists no oversight. These banks and financial institutions have gotten the money and are not sharing the wealth.

Lawmakers need to have strict guidelines when giving out our money. Congress gets bit in the "you know what", continuously because there is no one monitoring the piggy bank.

Lastly, the Dow Jones dipped under 8000 points today. This is a very bad sign.

NEW YORK — Wall Street hit levels not seen since 2003 on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones industrial average plunging below the 8,000 mark amid a dour economic outlook from the Federal Reserve and worries over the fate of Detroit's three automakers.

A cascade of selling occurred in the final minutes of the session as investors yanked money out of the market. For many, the real fear is that the recession might be even more protracted if Capitol Hill is unable to bail out the troubled auto industry.

Investors also scoured economic data that included minutes from the last meeting of the Federal Reserve in which policymakers lowered projections for economic activity this year and next. Economic worries caused across-the-board selling, with financial stocks particularly hard hit. continue

My take on the retention of Joe Lieberman

The blogosphere is on fire about Joe Lieberman.

He survived his coveted Homeland Security Committee Chairmanship, though his lack of loyalty to the Democratic Party was crapped all over.

I saw the writing on the wall last week and just decided, "oh well."

I understand Obama's bipartisan approach, but I disagree with Obama jumping into how Lieberman should have been reprimanded.

This should have been left up to Senator Harry Reid and the Democratic Senate Caucus, from all indications early on Reid was for removing Lieberman from the HSC Chairmanship. Not only Reid, but Senators Schumer and Durbin chimed in along with others, too.

The blogosphere is now angry at Harry Reid. Understood, but it was Obama who said that Lieberman should remain in the caucus.

There is one word that is in my vocabulary, it is "loyalty."

I could care less if Lieberman did not endorse Obama. There were many congressmen/women, Democrats, who did not endorse Obama for whatever reason. What I did expect from Joe Lieberman was silence.

Joe Lieberman is the worst example of what a senator should be. He is totally selfish, was angry at his Democratic colleagues for not campaigning for him after he lost the Democratic Primary in 2006, and took it out on them in 2008.

I am not going to list all the things Joe Lieberman said against Barack Obama for 2008, it is plenty, but I am going to question loyalty.

Loyalty for me is both sides of the sword. Lieberman's lack of loyalty and the Democratic Party's insistence of loyalty.

Joe Lieberman could have stayed in the Democratic Caucus, no one asked him not to, but rewarding of bad behavior is not the best way to do things. We don't know how Lieberman will be down the road. Some are believing that he is beholden to Barack Obama, but I say he is not.

He just proved that any politician can be rolled. Instead of Leader Reid taking care of Lieberman, he is rewarded to continue his behavior, give meaningless platitudes, and promise nothing for or to the Democrats.

I don't know how this will end, but there is nothing comforting with Lieberman hanging around. See, if Lieberman can do this, why not anyone else? When another senator gets angry, frustrated why not he or she too perform a Lieberman?

It would make perfect sense to do a "Lieberman". Gee whiz, who is going to reprimand anyone, who is going to ask about loyalty, certainly not the Democratic Party.

The "Vet" of The Clintons is on!!!!

Ok, we all know how the primaries were. It was consistent drama on the daily from Team Clinton. I mean, there was not a DAY that went by without SOMETHING leaked out there by Team Clinton.

Hillary Clinton is qualified to become Secretary of State. She would not be my first pick, since there are others far more qualified, but this is not my decision to make.

This vetting process should be simple, easy but truer than a leaky faucet, we know everything. Or do we?

My take is this. Hillary Clinton wants this position. Right now she is another junior senator, a bench warmer from New York with an international famous name. The senate is not structure to catapult a junior senator to any leader status, it is strictly seniority based.

So, if you lost the nomination, looking at your rival as President-Elect, worked publicly for him to move your support over, of course you will want a cabinet position. This is all about smart politics.

I don't see Hillary being an albatross around Obama's neck, for now. I see her benefiting Obama's Administration. The issue is Bill Clinton.

Team Obama is a strict, disciplined organization. We saw them at work for two years and saw Obama run a stellar campaign. While all the leaks are around us and the media is throwing its opinion out there, Team Obama is tight lipped. As they should be.

We don't know what was said between Obama and Clinton. We also know that Obama has talked to Richardson and rumored others like Kerry for this same position. Now, we hear all this noise about Bill Clinton's business dealings.

Bill Clinton is a former president and probably believes he should get a pass, indifference for this vetting process, but it won't work out that way.

During the primaries some of these questionable folks emerged, like Ron Burkle. As a private citizen, who cares, but in the public eye this is a different story.

All of Bill Clinton's speaking engagements will have to cease, especially the high profiled paying ones. This is potential conflict of interest.

The bottom line, Bill Clinton's books must be opened and examined. Period. Obama cannot allow indifference here, his judgment is at stake. Why appoint Hillary to this position with highly questionable business dealings being speculated? Remember, no drama, Obama?

If Barack Obama asks Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to be secretary of state, she likely will face questions about the global network her husband Bill has created with his foundation, speaking engagements, and business ventures, experts said Friday.

Those questions could include whether Bill Clinton has conflicts of interest or follows the State Department line in his dealings with business and government leaders overseas.

Since leaving the White House eight years ago, Bill Clinton has entered into business partnerships and established the William J. Clinton Foundation, which sponsors international development, AIDS care and other initiatives in projects around the world.

The Clintons dissolved their blind trust and sold their stocks last year, and Bill Clinton disengaged from some investments, to avoid conflict of interest questions while Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) campaigned for president.

But Bill Clinton still runs his foundation, which has raised at least $375 million from donors, including some from foreigners whose gifts have been questioned in newspaper articles.

In one case reported by The New York Times in January, for example, Canadian mining tycoon Frank Giustra gave $131 million to Bill Clinton's charitable enterprises after the two went to Kazakhstan together.

And Hillary covering her bases, if this vetting does not pan out.
From the other side, a Democratic source tells me that Clinton herself is conflicted about taking the job.

So, what will happen? Who knows? Hillary is not even commenting that a meet took place in Chicago last week, so who knows? But Hillary Clinton wants this and Bill better pony up and do whatever it takes for her to GET THIS.

Obama meets McCain in Chicago

Bottomline?

We will work together.

Obama and McCain sat together for a brief picture-taking moment with reporters, along with Rahm Emanuel, Obama's incoming White House chief of staff, and South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, McCain's close friend. Obama and McCain were heard briefly discussing football, and Obama cracked that "the national press is tame compared to the Chicago press."

When asked if he planned to help the Obama administration, McCain replied, "Obviously."

After the meeting, Obama and McCain issued a joint statement saying: "At this defining moment in history, we believe that Americans of all parties want and need their leaders to come together and change the bad habits of Washington so that we can solve the common and urgent challenges of our time."

"It is in this spirit that we had a productive conversation today about the need to launch a new era of reform where we take on government waste and bitter partisanship in Washington in order to restore trust in government, and bring back prosperity and opportunity for every hardworking American family," it said. "We hope to work together in the days and months ahead on critical challenges like solving our financial crisis, creating a new energy economy, and protecting our nation's security."

Citigroup to cut at least 50,000 jobs as the economy spiral downwards

This is bad. Really bad.

All weekend, the media has been atwitter with the rumor of enormous impending job cuts at Citigroup. This morning, Clusterstock reports that Citigroup has confirmed 50,000 job cuts:

Citi has confirmed the job cuts in a presentation (.pdf) post online. The presentation is actually a defense of the Citi business model, though it outlines the steps it has taken to shed legacy assets and bolster deposits.

But that news may not be the end of it. Some are speculating that the time is nearing for a Citigroup takeover or buyout.

Retail sales are down all over: Lowe's, Home Depot, Target, etc. And layaway plans, that most stores got rid of? It's backkkkkkk....

People with money are not spending it and those in financial crisis is just another small kink in the melting armour.

We have passed a recession folks, this is moving to a depression. We now have Philadelphia asking for bailout money and if we think this is the only city, THINK AGAIN.

As food prices soar, when things get tight the processed food, Spam benefits.
The economy is in tatters and, for millions of people, the future is uncertain. But for some employees at the Hormel Foods Corporation plant here, times have never been better. They are working at a furious pace and piling up all the overtime they want.

The workers make Spam, perhaps the emblematic hard-times food in the American pantry.

Through war and recession, Americans have turned to the glistening canned product from Hormel as a way to save money while still putting something that resembles meat on the table. Now, in a sign of the times, it is happening again, and Hormel is cranking out as much Spam as its workers can produce.

In a factory that abuts Interstate 90, two shifts of workers have been making Spam seven days a week since July, and they have been told that the relentless work schedule will continue indefinitely.

Spam, a gelatinous 12-ounce rectangle of spiced ham and pork, may be among the world’s most maligned foods, dismissed as inedible by food elites and skewered by comedians who have offered smart-alecky theories on its name (one G-rated example: Something Posing As Meat).

But these days, consumers are rediscovering relatively cheap foods, Spam among them. A 12-ounce can of Spam, marketed as “Crazy Tasty,” costs about $2.40. “People are realizing it’s not that bad a product,” said Dan Johnson, 55, who operates a 70-foot-high Spam oven.

Yep, Spam benefits when the pocketbook and wallet is very light.

As for Detroit and the Big 3 automakers? Don't expect any bailout from the lame duck congress, this is being thrown into President Obama's lap after January 20, 2009.

This Week With President-Elect Barack Obama, November 16, 2008

Downtown Chicago

••

If you did not read this, then do so. A definite, must read, all seven chapters.

How He Did It

Barack Obama had a gift, and he knew it. He had a way of making very smart, very accomplished people feel virtuous just by wanting to help Barack Obama. It had happened at Harvard Law School in the mid-1980s, at a time when the school was embroiled in fights over political correctness. He had won one of the truly plum prizes of overachievement at Harvard: he had been voted president of the law review, the first African-American ever so honored. Though his politics were conventionally (if not stridently) liberal, even the conservatives voted for him. Obama was a good listener, attentive and empathetic, and his powerful mind could turn disjointed screeds into reasoned consensus, but his appeal lay in something deeper. He was a black man who had moved beyond racial politics and narrowly defined interest groups. He seemed indifferent to, if not scornful of, the politics of identity and grievance. He showed no sense of entitlement or resentment. Obama had a way of transcending ambition, though he himself was ambitious as hell. In the grasping race for status and achievement—a competition that can seem like blood lust at a place like Harvard—Obama could make hypersuccessful meritocrats pause and remember a time (part mythical perhaps, but still beckoning) when service to others was more important than serving oneself.

Gregory Craig, a lawyer in Washington, D.C., was one of those Americans who wanted to believe again. Craig was not exactly an ordinary citizen—he had served and worked with the powerful all his life, as an aide to Sen. Edward Kennedy in the 1980s, as chief of policy planning at the State Department in the Clinton administration and as a lawyer hired to represent President Clinton at his impeachment trial in the U.S. Senate in 1999. He had seen the imperfections of the mighty, up close and personal, and by and large accepted human frailty. But, like a lot of Americans, he was tired of partisan bickering and yearned for someone who could rise above politics as usual. A 63-year-old baby boomer, Craig wanted to recapture the youthful idealism that he had experienced as a student at Harvard in the 1960s and later at Yale Law School, where his friends included Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham. In the late fall of 2003, he was invited to hear a young state senator from Illinois who was running for the U.S. Senate. Craig was immediately taken with Barack Obama. "He spoke 20 to 30 minutes, and I found him to be funny, smart and very knowledgeable for a state senator," Craig recalled. Craig was so visibly impressed that his host that evening, the longtime Washington mover and shaker Vernon Jordan, teased him, saying, "Greg has just fallen in love." continue

icebergslim's last word: yes we did and i am exhausted

Ok, I am back on line, somewhat.

There are many of us out there who have been on the O-Train since 2007, and many more since 2006.

I have been posting "This Week With Barack Obama" since July, 2007. Hey, that is a LONG TIME!!! So, I think it is JUST DUE that I took some time off to savior a very sweet win.

Many of us have been hopping around from different states since the Iowa Caucuses, working the peeps, and getting our peeps out to the polls, caucuses, performing the campaign's what knots.

Many of us have been orchestrating, participating in voter's registration drives since 2007. And it was these drives that made the difference in the primaries and November 4th.

So, if I am a bit lazy, lackadaisical, sipping my 'tini's while pouring through my Obama memory lane, be patient with me.

It is not every day that a masterful, sincere, real politician is elected through the most adversarial odds and comes out the winner.

All of us need to follow the lead of the Obamas and just chill, savor and be jubilant.

In the end, this moment is temporary because Barack's got a lot of shit on his plate and the rubes are lining up to jockey their position, to get a piece of the pie, just want a meet.

And us? We are watching because we expect big, bold things from the Obama Administration, this country needs just that right now.

Barack, 'ya heard????

Hope so.
